Margallo asks Dastis not miss the Brexit to reclaim Gibraltar

Alfonso Friday Dastis has taken possession of his post as foreign minister in the Palacio de Santa Cruz, promising to strive to realize that "Spain is back" after a year of political deadlock. He did so in an act in which his predecessor, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, he urged not to miss the opportunity of the Brexit to advance the Spanish claim to Gibraltar.

García-Margallo, who during his tenure was very combative in connection with the dispute of the Rock, would not say goodbye without remembering the new minister that the game is not played in two years, but in March, when it is expected that the UK invoke Article 50 of the Maastricht Treaty to open negotiations for disconnection of that country club community and the stance of other European partners.

"Either we are able to convince our partners and allies that umbrella, negotiation UK-EU in any case protects Gibraltar, because the jurisprudence among other things says that Gibraltar is not part of the United Kingdom, or come to the paradox that had a country outside the Union with a colony in the Union, which no longer an anthology nonsense "and former minister recalled.

García-Margallo, who was excited at times in his speech -in which he reviewed some of his performances in the Ministry-, had words of thanks for all and did not forget to ask for his successor to be displayed "generous" with members of his team who have accompanied these years, many of whom rely on being appointed ambassadors.

Upon receipt of the portfolio held by García-Margallo, Dastis had words of praise for him and said, among other things, its ability to make a law External Action and the Foreign Service of the State was approved, along with other texts that affect the operation of the Diplomatic Corps, and who could not be implemented in the last 35 or 40 years.

Continuity
The new minister made no reference to the question of Gibraltar, although it announced that there will be continuity in the work of the Ministry, that priorities will remain: "Europe and other geographic areas of special attention to Spain and particularly Latin America." But above all, Dastis said he wants to "give back to the play button and show that Spain is really back" after a year of political paralysis.

He concluded by expressing his desire to realize what Garcia-Margallo that the word 'impossible' does not exist in the Foreign Ministry had said.

The ceremony was attended by Ministers of Agriculture and Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, and Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, Alvaro Nadal, and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Jorge Moragas, and all Ministry officials and many members of the Diplomatic Corps, to which the new minister belongs.
